2012 – A year of investment for the Lundbeck Foundation
The three subsidiaries of the Lundbeck Foundation, H. Lundbeck, ALK and Falck, invested in growth and expansion, while Lundbeckfond Invest achieved one of its best returns ever, outperforming the benchmark. Lundbeckfond Ventures invested in five new companies with activities in ground-breaking technologies such as stem cell-based therapy and gene therapy, and Lundbeckfond Emerge made its first investment. At the same time, the Foundation maintained last year's high level of grants at close to half a billion Danish kroner for Danish medical and natural science research of the highest international standard.

Lundbeck Foundation centre in Aarhus for top European brain research

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences, is now joining forces with Aarhus University as its Danish partner of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. On the initiative of the Lundbeck Foundation, a new elite research centre – DANDRITE – is to form the prestigious setting for top level international research in the field of neuroscience, backed by an anticipated DKK 500 million.

In pursuit of penicillin version 2.0
Chronic infections are a growing problem in our world. The bacteria clump together, which protects them against both antibiotics and the body’s immune system. The recently appointed Lundbeck Foundation Fellow, Thomas Bjarnsholt, is trying to learn more about bacterial fortresses to make it easier to fight them in future.

Record-breaking grant: New research project to investigate the causes of mental disorders
Causes for mental disorders will now be thoroughly investigated. A new grant – the largest sum ever awarded to a Danish research team in this field – will support Danish researchers in their pursuit of understanding mental disorders. The project may also lead to new prevention and treatment methods.

Research talent price to bright young talent
Light is life-giving. Emission of absorbed light, or fluorescence, has given life to young scientist’s career. The Lundbeck Foundation has awarded the 30-year-old post.doc. Thomas Just Sørensen, Keble College, Oxford University and Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen the Talent Prize for younger scientists. The prize is a personal award of 100.000 DKK (approx. £11.000).
